Tunbridge Wells, Kent – A local nursery has been recognised for its commitment to children’s health and wellbeing after achieving a national Sun Safe accreditation.
Banana Moon Day Nursery Tunbridge Wells has joined other settings in the Banana Moon group in being recognised as a “Sun Safe Nursery”, highlighting its efforts to educate young children about staying safe in the sun.
The accreditation is awarded to nurseries that actively promote sun safety, including raising awareness of UV risks, encouraging protective habits such as wearing hats and sunscreen, and working closely with parents to reinforce these messages at home.
Across the Banana Moon network, staff have introduced activities, discussions, and resources to help children understand the importance of sun protection from an early age. These include practical routines like applying sun cream before outdoor play and learning simple safety messages such as “Slip, Slop, Slap.”
The initiative aims to reduce long-term health risks, including skin damage and skin cancer, by embedding good habits early in life. Nurseries must also demonstrate clear policies and consistent daily practice to gain the accreditation.
The recognition adds to the nursery’s wider focus on safety and child development, following a recent “Good” rating from Ofsted, which praised the setting’s overall quality of education and care.
A spokesperson said the accreditation reflects the nursery’s commitment to ensuring children can enjoy outdoor play “safely and confidently,” especially during warmer months.
